This unit examines key principles, strategies, and approaches to engage with and assess diverse children and adolescents experiencing mental-ill health. Students interrogate how to conduct responsible, safe, and ethical risk assessments guided by relevant legislative frameworks. Learning includes a comprehensive analysis of child and adolescent-friendly models and approaches for successful clinical practice. Students also critically reflect on their interpersonal communication when conducting age-appropriate biopsychosocial, culturally appropriate risk assessments.

Learning outcomes

 

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Optimise client-centered engagement with diverse children and adolescents experiencing mental ill-health and their families or carers.
  2. Interrogate ethical and legislative frameworks in children and adolescent mental health practice.
  3. Articulate a framework for assessing the needs of families of children and adolescents experiencing mental ill-health.
  4. Plan age-appropriate and culturally appropriate biopsychosocial assessments for culturally diverse children and adolescents.
  5. Develop assessments to facilitate engagement and collaborative relationships with children and adolescents and their families or carers.
