The focus of this unit is the assessment of people who experience the symptoms of mental ill-health. Students are supported to extend their knowledge and skills in conducting mental health assessments, to encompass the full range of complex health needs of mental health consumers and their family or carers. Students will learn how to conduct a range of comprehensive risk assessments to advance their understanding and application of classification systems to mental health disorders. The unit requires students to critically evaluate how to apply the findings of an assessment to provide a range of ethical consumer-centred treatment options.

Learning outcomes

 

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Examine the necessary components of a mental state examination that includes the full range of the health needs of mental health consumers and their family or carers.
  2. Analyse and apply crisis assessment, clinical risk assessment, suicide risk assessment, and assessment of the risk of self-harm in a range of settings.
  3. Accurately interpret integrated assessment findings to make informed decisions to provide a range of ethical consumer-centred treatment options.
  4. Critically analyse the ethical and legal factors involved in mental health assessments.
  5. Articulate the proficient application of health assessment skills to their work context.
