This unit introduces students to the key principles and approaches of mental health and recovery-oriented services delivered to diverse children, adolescents, and their families. Learning focuses on presentations of mental ill-health in children and adolescents, who are experiencing challenging social and family environments. The unit examines a range of barriers and enablers to child and adolescent friendly mental health service provision. Students will reflect on strategies to provide culturally appropriate, family-focused, multidisciplinary, and intersectoral mental health services to children and adolescents.

Learning outcomes

 

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interrogate the key principles and approaches for adapting mental health and recovery-oriented services for diverse children, adolescents, and their families.
  2. Identify and evaluate common factors contributing to mental ill-health in children and adolescents.
  3. Articulate the impact of mental ill-health in children and adolescents that could impact their growth, development, mental health, and emotional wellbeing.
  4. Assess the barriers and enablers of children’s and adolescents’ access to mental health services.
  5. Critically review strategies that underlie child and adolescent friendly mental health service provision including multidisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration.
